In Praise Of Shadows

For this project, we had to select a text or article that we feel strongly about and design a screen-based reading experience that communicates our interpretation of the text.

My chosen text piece was ‘In Praise of Shadows’ by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki, and it talks about the foundations of the Japanese aesthetic tradition. Plus the author also mentions how the Japanese embraced lives in darkness and believed that beauty must always emerge from reality. Especially touching upon the beauty of shadows and darkness in Japanese architecture. I have used elements such as translucent shoji doors and sunray circles to play with that concept and engage the viewer in a more interactive way.

For this project, we had to create an interactive online tool and design this tool with a specific goal in mind for a specific audience. It would receive input from the user, and based on the input it receives, it provides a unique output.

I decided to create a visual and audio generator connected by a certain mood and played when the user presses any alphabet keys on their keyboard. The user has to press and play around to remember which mood is which alphabet key, and they can then leave it on to play in the background while they are doing their task to add a background song to their daily life.
