BFA Communication Design Thesis 2024
Risograph Printing, Spore Exploration
Posters, Zines, Photgraphy and Business Cards
Playing and experimenting with the Risograph printing method. Spore scans achieved from variety of mushrooms foraged in South Mountain Reservation in New Jersey and Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers. Digitally altering the spore scans to create visually psychedelic and hallucinogenic posters that represent visuals
that one would see after ingesting wild shrooms.

Risograph printing method helps bring a vibrant aspect to the design. Using Kozuka and Meiriyo risograph printers with inks such as Gold, Flou Pink, Cornflower, Orange and more.

Part of the BFA CD Thesis 2024- Mycelial Musings project.

Foraging Walk Finds:

My research started with my Munching on mushrooms class last semester, that gave me the opportunity to go on my first few foraging walks with the New York Mycological Society. I learnt how to hunt/look for wild mushrooms from professionals and gain some extra knowledge on the various species we found. Using the mushrooms foraged I brought them home- not to cook, but to actually get spore prints out of them. Inspired by Lucinda Hitchcock’s work.

Original Spore Print Scans:

Using the spore prints I then digitally altered and played with the scans to create poster print designs with information about the specific mushroom that the spore print is of. Also inspired by psychedelic visuals as described by many that have experienced. I created repetitive patterns out of the spore shapes to mimic the sort of visuals one usually thinks of mushrooms- most likely thinking of shrooms the psychedelic kind. I alsoexperimented with few more colors to essentially get the audience to view these mushrooms as beautiful and enticing, unlike how their appearances are usually described to be dirty.
